When your yoga instructor brings you to a certain position and has you remain in that position, it’s not meant to torture you. By holding these specific positions, your body is building certain muscles that you are using. A large number of yoga poses are using muscles in your back and stomach, which are essential to the strength of muscles surrounding your spine. When these muscles gain strength, it can help your body achieve correct upright posture and movement. Anyone with back pain can greatly benefit from stretching and holding poses. Many chiropractors will recommend yoga to prevent back pain.
Stretching and Relaxation
What some people may love the most about yoga is the stretching and feeling of relaxation. When we hold certain, less strenuous poses, this causes some muscles to flex while others are stretching. This combination allows muscles and joints to relax and will promote flexibility. Because yoga seeks to incorporate the entire body, a variety of muscles can benefit from one pose. When we stretch the hamstring muscles, this helps to enhance the motion of the pelvis, which will decrease stress on the lower back. When you are participating in yoga, be sure to maintain a deep, full breath.
Posture, Balance, Alignment
Alignment and proper posture is a staple of chiropractic medicine. Through a consistent practice of yoga, when both sides of the body are stretched equally, this will help improve your posture and increase balance. Eventually, our bodies will be trained to remain in this proper posture, even when we’re sitting at a desk all day. This posture will help keep the natural curvature of the spine.
Even after a few yoga sessions, our minds and bodies will be more aware of its position and posture, and when it’s not in proper alignment. When we are aware of what is good for our bodies, we can work to prevent future problems.
